Imperial Cities and Ancient Medinas

Morocco’s cultural richness is as compelling as its landscapes. The four Imperial Cities — Marrakech, Fez, Rabat, and Meknès — each have their own character, and experiencing them on a motorcycle tour adds a dimension that no package holiday can match.

Marrakech, the Red City, is the beating heart of Morocco — a sensory overload of bustling souks, snake charmers, spice merchants, and the vast Jemaa el-Fnaa square that comes alive every evening. Fez is older and more labyrinthine — a medieval medina of winding alleys, historic tanneries, and a cultural heritage so rich that getting deliberately lost is the best way to explore. Rabat, the capital, offers a more authentic, less touristy experience, with a medina that caters to locals rather than visitors.

Beyond the cities, Morocco’s historical sites are world-class. What to Expect on the Road

Moroccan roads have improved enormously in recent years, and the main touring routes are well-surfaced and perfectly rideable. The mountain passes are smooth tarmac with proper hairpin engineering, though they demand respect — the drops are real and the locals drive with characterful enthusiasm. Outside the main cities, traffic is light, and the variety of terrain keeps every day’s riding fresh.

The tour is primarily tarmac-based, with optional gravel sections connecting the Dades and Todra Gorges for those who enjoy a taste of adventure riding. City riding — particularly navigating into and out of the medinas — is an experience in itself, but one that guided touring handles with local knowledge and well-practised routines.

The climate varies dramatically. The coast is moderated by Atlantic breezes, the Atlas passes can be cool at altitude, and the Sahara is hot and dry. Layering is essential, and the temperature difference between a morning mountain pass and an afternoon desert stretch can be significant.

Moroccan food is exceptional. Tagines slow-cooked with preserved lemons and olives, couscous piled with vegetables and tender lamb, fresh flatbread from street ovens, pastilla layered with pigeon, almonds and cinnamon, and endless glasses of sweet mint tea — eating in Morocco is a daily highlight. Best Time to Ride

Morocco’s riding season runs from September to June, with October to May offering the most comfortable conditions. Spring — March to May — is the sweet spot, with warm days, wildflowers in the Atlas foothills, and manageable temperatures in the desert. Autumn — September to November — is equally good, with warm weather and clear skies. Mid-summer from June to August brings extreme heat in the interior and Sahara, making riding uncomfortable during the middle of the day. Winter is mild on the coast and in the lowlands, though the Atlas passes can see snow at higher elevations.
