Explore Scotland by Motorcycle

Scotland is world-class motorcycle touring on your doorstep. Wild Highland passes, single-track roads through empty glens, a rugged Atlantic coastline that rivals Scandinavia, and a culture of whisky, hospitality, and dramatic history that makes every stop as rewarding as the riding. You don’t need to fly halfway around the world for genuinely spectacular touring — some of the best motorcycle roads in Europe are right here.

The Highlands and Beyond

The Scottish Highlands are the main draw, and they deliver on every level. Roads like the A82 through Glencoe, the sweeping route along the shores of Loch Ness, and the mountain passes of Wester Ross offer riding that shifts constantly between dramatic mountain scenery, dark lochs, and vast open moorland. Traffic thins to almost nothing once you leave the central belt behind, and the sense of space and wildness is remarkable for a country this close to home.

The North Coast 500 has put Scotland firmly on the international touring map, and rightly so. This 500-mile loop around the northern Highlands takes in towering sea cliffs, white sand beaches that look like they belong in the Caribbean, remote fishing villages, and mountain roads that twist through some of the oldest geological landscapes on earth. It’s best ridden over several days rather than rushed, with time to stop at every viewpoint and detour down every promising side road.

Scotland’s islands add another dimension entirely. Skye, connected by bridge, offers some of the most dramatic riding in Britain — the Cuillin Ridge as a backdrop to roads that wind through a landscape of sea lochs and volcanic rock formations. The Isle of Mull, reached by ferry, is quieter still, with single-track roads and a pace of life that feels wonderfully detached from the mainland.

What to Expect on the Road

Scottish roads range from excellent A-roads with flowing curves and good surfaces to single-track Highland roads with passing places — the latter being some of the most enjoyable and characterful riding in the UK. The terrain is constantly varied, from gentle lowland farmland to serious mountain passes where the weather can change in minutes.

The weather is Scotland’s one unpredictable element. Rain is part of the package, but it’s rarely persistent, and the compensation is a quality of light that photographers and riders alike find addictive — when the sun breaks through over a Highland loch or a rainbow appears above a sea cliff, the scenery is genuinely breathtaking. Pack good waterproofs and embrace whatever the sky throws at you.

Beyond the Bike

Scottish hospitality is legendary. From cosy Highland pubs with roaring fires to boutique hotels in converted castles, the accommodation options are excellent and the welcome is always warm. The food scene has been transformed — fresh seafood from the lochs and coast, Highland venison, Aberdeen Angus beef, and a whisky heritage that needs no introduction. A distillery visit or two is practically mandatory.

The history runs deep — battlefields, castles, and clan stories are woven into the landscape at every turn. Edinburgh and Glasgow provide urban culture and nightlife, but the real magic of Scotland is out on the road, where the mountains, lochs, and coastline combine to create touring that rivals anything on the continent.

Best Time to Ride

Scotland’s riding season runs from April to October, with May to September offering the best balance of warmth and daylight. June and July bring the longest days — it barely gets dark in the far north — while September offers quieter roads and beautiful autumn colours. The midges can be fierce in the western Highlands from June to August, so a good neck buff and insect repellent earn their place in your luggage.
