ARCTIC AND THE MIDNIGHT SUN

Tour Overview

Forget everything you think you know about the Arctic. In summer, this extraordinary region becomes a land of endless daylight, lush green landscapes, and surprisingly warm weather. This epic motorcycle tour begins after an overnight ferry from Harwich and covers over 2,500 miles of scenic riding, ferry crossings, and unforgettable roads through Norway’s fjords, glaciers, and into the legendary Arctic Circle. From the Midnight Sun in Mo i Rana to the twisting bridges of the Atlantic Ocean Road, this adventure offers world-class motorcycle touring, iconic natural landmarks, and the chance to experience Norway’s dramatic beauty at its finest.

Think of the Arctic and you might imagine endless snow, biting frost, and months of darkness lit only by the Northern Lights. But in summer, this legendary region transforms into a land of lush greenery, warm sunshine, and skies that never darken. This is the realm of the Midnight Sun, where the sun stays high for weeks, casting a surreal glow over Norway’s fjords, glaciers, and mountain roads.

Your adventure begins with an overnight ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, followed by a scenic ride through Northern Germany. After a night on the road, you’ll board the ferry to Norway, arriving in Oslo and heading north to Lillehammer, former host of the Winter Olympics. Over the next four days, you’ll ride up the spine of Norway, with optional detours onto quiet backroads and hidden routes.

In Trondheim, soak in the charm of clapboard buildings lining the Nidelva River, as the long days and perpetual twilight become your new normal. Then it’s on to Mo i Rana, gateway to the Arctic Circle. Spend two nights here, giving you time to ride 50 miles north to cross N66°33′39″, visit the Arctic Circle monument, and take an optional boat trip to the Svartisen Glacier. Here, you’ll witness the true magic of the Midnight Sun, where the sun never sets or even touches the horizon.

Next, ride south along the rugged coast of the Norwegian Sea, ferry-hopping from one fjord to the next. The roads twist and climb around dramatic inlets, offering some of the most scenic riding in the world. Highlights include the iconic Atlantic Ocean Road, a series of bridges that appear to float above the sea. You’ll stay in Namsos, then enjoy two nights in Ålesund, a perfect base for riding the famous Trollstigen Highway and visiting its spectacular waterfalls.

From Ålesund, continue south to Bergen, where you’ll spend two nights exploring the UNESCO-listed Hanseatic Wharf, wandering medieval alleyways and timber balconies. Then ride to Kongsberg, with the option to visit the Heroes of Telemark Museum, before returning to Oslo for your final Norwegian ferry crossing.

Back in Germany, enjoy two more days of riding through the north, including a visit to the UNESCO-listed Kinderdijk windmills. After a few final ferry crossings, your journey concludes at the Hook of Holland, where you’ll board the overnight ferry back to Harwich.

Throughout this tour, you’ll stay in traditional Norwegian hotels, ride empty and exhilarating roads, and experience some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. From fjords to glaciers, from the Midnight Sun to the Arctic Circle, Norway is a motorcycling paradise and this is your chance to ride it.

NB: Some days on this tour are long and start early, especially when ferry-hopping across the Norwegian Sea. But the remote beauty and dramatic landscapes of Norway make every mile worth it.

Norway has incredible roads that present scenery that will astonish and amaze. Motorrad Tours make it so easy to enjoy this to the maximum.
