Tour Overview
Giżycko is truly part of “the land of a thousand lakes”, whose greatest attraction is nature. There are over 100 lakes around the town, providing sailing activities in the summer and iceboating in the winter. From here we head North East into Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia where we will take time out to relax and explore the towns of Riga and Tallinn.
Riga is noted for its Art Nouveau and 19th century wooden architecture and Tallinn’s Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and both are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. But before these two great towns we visit Vilnius, “The Jerusalem of the North” as named by Napoleon as he was passing through in 1812, with its fascinating Jewish history dating back to the 8th century. If you have time visit the Museum of Genocide victims, as well as dealing with the systematic murder of Jews by the Nazis, it studies the brutal treatment of the nation by the Soviets during both the war and subsequent occupation. Housed in the former KGB building across from Lukiškės Square, the museum is in its basement, the prison used by the Russian secret service, as well as the original execution chamber, where bullet holes still scar the walls.
Leaving the Baltic States we cross the Gulf of Finland to the vibrant city of Helsinki, where you have time to take in the sights or just kick back and enjoy a drink and a meal in the Market Square before heading West and a ferry crossing to Stockholm.
Sweden is the seventh country we’ll visit and we arrive in Stockholm early in the morning after our overnight ferry. Visit the Royal Palace, Skansen open-air museum or take in gorgeous views from Kaknastornet tower with a full day and night to explore the city. Our second day in Sweden sees us heading South towards Malmo and the Oresund Bridge and Tunnel that takes us into Denmark and the city of Copenhagen. This iconic road sweeps over and under the the Oresund Straights for 7.5 miles, making it the longest road/rail bridge in Europe. Our penultimate day takes us on a short ferry ride back into Germany, to Berlin for an opportunity to explore this vibrant city and a well earned farewell meal at at a local restaurant.
This action packed fortnight has some long days in the saddle tempered with plenty of time to explore Riga, Tallinn, Helsinki and Berlin.
Excellent - It did what it said on the tin. I added my non-motorcycling wife to the final hotel & dinner, and everything was arranged very well.
